An Kang

This handsome little guy, An Kang, was hospitalized locally with an intestinal perforation, but the local hospital was not equipped to deal with his problems. A generous hospital in Beijing agreed to accept him as a charity case, but after several weeks and a bill of over $100,000 (yes, six zeros!) he had not improved and they were not even sure if he would survive.

In August 2016, we agreed to help, and transferred him to our amazing pediatric NICU specialists in another hospital. At this time, he was only 7 weeks old. We offered his parents accommodation and meals while little Kang was hospitalized.

While Kang was in the hospital, the staff at Dew Drops Little Flower worked with his parents, teaching them how to provide the specialized care he needs as he awaits his next surgery. We’ve encouraged his parents to not only meet his medical and basic care requirements, but also to understand his emotional needs for love, nurturing and physical contact. His mom learned to provide the extra skin-to-skin kangaroo care that will help him not only heal and grow but thrive and develop strong attachments despite his very rough beginnings.

In October 2016, he was discharged home to wait for his next surgery as his condition improved. His next surgery will not be for a few more months, so the family have decided to return to their home in Inner Mongolia while they wait. It is very reassuring for them to know that our Family Support unit is there for them any time they have questions about Kang’s care or treatment. We look forward to seeing them again when it is time for Kang’s next surgery.
